2005 Season MVP Awards

MVP
Rookie of the year
Jon Dryden
Nate Fisher

On May 5, in front of our largest gang (and group photo) ever, Jim Whitney presented the 2005 MVP award to the general/field/equipment manager Jon Dryden, whose three first-place votes edged out Debbie ("'cause she's a Brooklyn Girl and out hit me by miles!" according to one voter) and then Lou for the 'trophy.' Jon of course embodies the Slacker spirit: 100% fun, 0% negativity, and who cares about his skills (though someone voted because of the day he hit for the cycle, and though his menacing opposite-field prowess is well-known, I'll never again make the mistake of not covering the left-field line). Jon is also why I found my way to the park back in '01, and I'm the one who got all you Craigslist people there, so there. Yay Jon. Brendan, Sean and Tom ("'cause he tried to teach me how to catch!") also received votes. Khris announced the Rookie of the Year, who was Nathaniel Fisher, overwhelmingly. Runners up were Steve Brockway, John Vetter, and elder statesman Marvin. The tip of the iceberg of another great freshman class. With a mailing list of over 170 (most of whom are presumably dead), we had an amazing 3% voter turnout. Way to go. Even the winners were non-voters.

2004 Season MVP Awards

Inaugaral MVP

Rich Lamb
Jim Whitney

Rookie of the year

Khris Weng
Mike Landers
We have a tie in both categories! Our inaugural MVP award will be shared by Jim Whitney and Rich Lamb, both of whom had identical results. The geographical breakdown is uncertain but it appears they split Brooklyn, with Whitney taking Queens and Lamb taking Manhattan. Whitney and Lamb (along with Debbie Deane & Jon Dryden) suffered and rejoiced together through the Sox postseason, and when asked if this Slacker trophy finally puts an end to The Curse, New Englander Whitney smiled and said, "fuck no." OK, more cursing next year! Lamb, who was peeking at the returns all week, issued a statement from election headquarters: "As the clock ticked down to midnight, I felt like I was watching an item on eBay."
The Rookie of the Year award is split between Khris Weng and Mike Landers. This reflects a voter split as well: some chose a standout hitter and organizational leader, while others went with the only full-time regular member who was able to avoid getting an extra-base hit all season! So the voters awarded various aspects of 'performance' in their choices, which is exactly how it was intended. This was reflected in Mike's statement: "Thanks. Much appreciated. I'd like to thank all those who voted for me eventhough I am a Red Sox fan. I'm glad to be sharing the award with KHRIS, it's nice to know that we were recognized for hitting (me) and making errors (him) ;-)"
All four players now enter the new Hall of Lame, and get to play at their positions of choice for Opening Day next year. (Hey, with $70 in the kitty, what do you expect? A book deal?)
With 10 people casting votes, the margin of error for this vote was +/- 75%. There were only a few voting improprieties reported, including a Rookie attempting to vote for himself three times, plus a couple of write-ins for the Pink Sweater.
Interestingly, all the winners received three first-place votes each. Adam E. and Jim C., the runners up in their categories (with Adam just short of making it a three-way tie), received two first-place votes each, and Jon and Dave received one each, among other votes they all received. Other vote-getters included Lou, Brian, & Jason. The median income level among voters was $12,241 and the median education level was "yeah, I took some night courses there."
